Kachori Batata (Aloo Bonda)

This is a typical home street food in the small alleys of Mombasa. The ladies make it in their homes and sell just outside it, making it very different from the common street food. The good thing about these hardworking ladies is that the food they make is limited and not mass produced, the downside-if you don’t order or buy it  on time , you miss it! Along with these kachoris they make bajias (made from pigeon peas) and viazi vya karai and chutneys.
Early in the morning others prepare Bokhobokho (sweet dish prepared with wheat) and barazi na mahamri (dry pigeon peas with sweet fried bread), recipes in this blog.

5 potatoes boiled, peeled and mashed
1 teaspoon salt or to taste
1 green chilli finely chopped
2-3 sprigs coriander leaves chopped
1/2 teaspoon chilli powder

Mix all the above together and make 1 inch balls. Keep aside.

When ready to serve or eat take-
1 cup gram (channa)flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon chilli powder
water to make a thick yet dropping batter

Mix all the above ingredients to make the batter.
Heat oil in a wok to deep fry.

Dip each potato ball into the prepared batter and slowly and carefully place into the hot oil. Fry till golden. Serve with tamarind chutney or ketchup. Yummy on a chilly day!

Tamarind Chutney
1/2 cup tamarind
1/2 cup warm water

Soak the above for at least 10 minutes and then squeeze the tamarind to extract the juice. Take the leftover pulp and seeds and discard. In the tamarind juice add 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon chilli flakes and 1/4 teaspoon garlic paste. Mix well and serve with your favorite snack like the above.
